Pulse: live events for your website, explained simply

By Lorant Alexandru Kurazs1 min read

Most DevQuake apps are for everyday life. Pulse is the one for developers. It is the realtime engine we needed for our own apps, offered as a service so you can use it in yours.

What Pulse does

You send an event to a channel, for example "order 1042 is ready" or "the score changed". Every browser listening to that channel receives it live, within moments, without reloading the page.

Typical uses:

  • live notifications and status updates on a website,
  • scoreboards and dashboards that update on their own,
  • small collaborative tools where everyone sees changes as they happen.

Keys for every situation

Pulse has three kinds of keys:

  • secret keys for your server, which may send any event,
  • public keys for listening in the browser,
  • client keys for users who may send their own events.

Reliable delivery

Events are delivered with Server-Sent Events, a simple and robust web standard. Where that is not possible, Pulse falls back to polling, so your users still get their updates.

Only the events you expect

You can describe your events and Pulse refuses everything else. That keeps channels clean and protects you from unexpected data.

Try it live

The front page has a live demo between two browsers: open it twice and watch an event travel from one to the other.
